Our story

A 5,000-year
tradition, made for today.

We make a single thing carefully: roasted foxnuts that honor where they come from and the people who grow them.

Farmer holding fresh lotus seed pods in Bihar
How it's made

Four steps. No shortcuts.

Harvest
Step N°01

Harvest

Lotus seed pods are hand-picked from still ponds across Darbhanga, Bihar — often before dawn, when the water is glass-still.

Sort
Step N°02

Sort

Each pod is opened by hand and the seeds graded by size. We keep only Grade A; the rest goes home with the families who grew them.

Pop
Step N°03

Pop

Seeds are sun-dried, then briefly dry-roasted in cast iron until they pop into the light, white phool makhana you know.

Pack
Step N°04

Pack

Within 24 hours of popping, the makhana is sealed in recyclable steel tins or kraft pouches — no preservatives, no air, no compromise.

100% of our makhana comes from a 60km radius in Darbhanga, Bihar.

03

Pack with care

Steel tins (recyclable). Soy-based inks. Kraft mailers. Compostable seals.

04

Stay small

We cap monthly output. Slow growth keeps the craft and the people intact.

Frequently asked

Good questions, honest answers.

What exactly are foxnuts?+

Foxnuts (Euryale ferox), or makhana, are seeds harvested from the lotus plant that grows in still ponds — most famously in Bihar, India. They’ve been part of Indian wellness traditions for over 5,000 years.

Are they really healthy?+

Yes. A 30g serving gives ~5g of plant protein, ~90 calories, almost no sugar, and zero gluten. They’re also low in fat and rich in magnesium and potassium.

How are they made?+

Hand-harvested, sun-dried, then dry-roasted in cast iron until they puff. We season in small batches with food-grade spices and seal in recyclable steel tins within 24 hours.

How long do they stay fresh?+

Each tin stays fresh for 9 months unopened, and 4–6 weeks once opened (if you can resist that long). Keep in a cool, dry place.

Do you ship internationally?+

Yes — to 28 countries. Free shipping over ₹1,499 within India and over $39 internationally.

Can I return a tin?+

If you’re not in love with your first order, we’ll refund it, no questions asked. Just email hello@makhanamagic.com within 14 days.
